Julie Becker: Fostering Sustainable Finance And A Culture Of Trust

Julie Becker champions sustainable finance through innovation, trust and purpose-driven leadership.

One of the pivotal moment’s of Julie Becker’s career was founding the Luxembourg Green Exchange (LGX) in 2016. “Through LGX, we pioneered sustainable finance and contributed to making it a priority around the world,” she explains. “We positioned the Luxembourg Stock Exchange [LuxSE] and with it, Luxembourg, as a global leader in sustainable finance.”

Keeping a close eye on the regulatory environment, LuxSE provides expertise to help advance market standards and policy development. It also cooperates with other exchanges to foster sustainable finance initiatives and strengthen financial markets.

Becker is navigating in an industry that “mirrors the world’s turbulences”. AI is significantly impacting the world of finance, for instance. “If used correctly, its potential to reshape capital markets is immense… but it also introduces new risks that we need to address clearly and quickly.

Exchanges bring transparency, which is the foundation of investor trust,” Becker says.

A lawyer by training and CEO of LuxSE since 2021, Becker has also been proud of the “inclusive and respectful company culture” she’s helped foster, as well as the vision, commitment and drive of those around her. And it’s this sense of purpose that is also attracting young talent, as “we sometimes receive 200 CVs even for traineeship positions.”

Becker figured out over the years where she could have the most impact by adding depth and breadth to her expertise and “learning relentlessly”, as well as having support and trust from others. “It makes a decisive difference. As a CEO, I try to create the same conditions for people in my teams and in my network through sponsorship, opportunity, and more importantly the confidence to step into bigger roles.”

It’s important, she adds, to show up even if you don’t feel perfectly prepared, and never to underestimate the power of well-being. “Rest, reflection and inspiration are not indulgences, they are prerequisites for clarity, creativity and resilience.”

Her advice to the next generation of leaders is to remain humble while continuing to learn and to know their values. “It’s not just about what you do, but how you do it: with integrity, loyalty, respect and a clear sense of purpose.”
