Spuerkeess Appoints Gaëlle Haag As COO In Generational Leadership Shift

Gaëlle Haag joins Spuerkeess’s leadership as the bank advances its Strategic Plan 2030.

Luxembourg’s Conseil de Gouvernement has named Gaëlle Haag Director and Chief Operating Officer of Spuerkeess, effective 1 November 2026, continuing the bank’s generational leadership renewal under new CEO Benoît Elvinger.

The nomination, confirmed on 2 October 2026, follows clearance from the competent banking supervisory authorities, which raised no objection as part of the mandatory approval process ahead of the appointment.

As Chief Operating Officer, Haag will take on responsibility for several areas central to executing Spuerkeess’s strategic priorities. Her remit covers the evolution of the bank’s operational model, its response to accelerating technological change, and the reinforcement of compliance and cybersecurity standards, three themes increasingly decisive for a systemically important retail and SME bank operating in a fast digitising sector.

Haag brings more than twenty years of experience across finance and insurance. A dual Luxembourg and Belgian national, she has held senior roles with a strong entrepreneurial dimension at established Luxembourg financial institutions, and spent part of her career in consulting, leading strategic transformation mandates for financial and public sector institutions both domestically and at European level. She holds a Master’s degree in Business Engineering, Advanced Management and Finance from the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management.

Her arrival follows closely on Benoît Elvinger’s recent appointment as CEO, a role in effect since 1 October 2026. Camille Fohl, Chairman of the Board, described the appointment as bringing fresh experience to “an experienced team, highly committed to Spuerkeess’s mission.” Elvinger, for his part, pointed to the value of diversified expertise within the Management Board for “pursuing the Bank’s continuous transformation in service of its clients and Luxembourg’s economic development, while preserving the solidity and trust that define Spuerkeess.”

The nomination forms part of the bank’s Strategic Plan 2030 and marks a further step in the generational renewal of its leadership, as Spuerkeess, wholly owned by the Luxembourg State since 1856, positions its top team for the next phase of its transformation.
