Prince Guillaume has represented Luxembourg on the global stage since the age of 19, and as he prepares to succeed his father, Grand Duke Henri, he is poised to redefine the role of head of state. Beyond ceremonial duties, Guillaume has been closely involved in elevating Luxembourg’s economic presence worldwide. Over the past two decades, he has led more than 70 economic missions across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa, the first to South Korea at the age of 19.
In this role, he has helped to forge partnerships that have attracted investment, boosted trade, and enhanced Luxembourg’s visibility in industries from space and health innovation to ICT, construction, and energy.
Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce Director Carlo Thelen says: “His active involvement in economic missions and international business events has helped promote the country’s entrepreneurial spirit and global outreach. His understanding of the business landscape, from family-owned companies to innovative start-ups, aligns closely with the Chamber of Commerce’s mission to foster entrepreneurship and strengthen Luxembourg’s position as a dynamic and open economy.”
More than just lip service, community actors applaud the future Grand Duke’s authenticity and curiosity. Prince Guillaume has served as “parrain”, or champion to Luxembourg startup federation Pulse, consistently attending their annual summer gathering. Pulse President Genna Elvin recalls an interaction from 2025: “I clearly remember walking him back to his car at Arendt, and speaking with him about the future of artificial intelligence in Luxembourg. It was so incredible to see someone, in his position, be genuinely curious and invested in our startups. He asked questions that illustrated to me, he was already very well informed and I felt safe knowing that our future Duke is prepared for the future ahead.”
This unwavering support was also acknowledged by House of Startups CEO Philippe Linster. “His support goes far beyond courtesy: he shows genuine interest in our founders and their projects, and acts as a true door-opener to international markets,” he says, adding; “Without seeking the spotlight, he uses his role to connect people and promote our country. We are fortunate to have him as an ambassador for our startup ecosystem – and, on a personal note, he’s always a great person to talk to!”
Born in Luxembourg City in 1981, Guillaume grew up at Fischbach Castle, the family residence since 1987. A close-knit upbringing and early exposure to community service—from scouting missions and choir participation to reforestation projects in Nepal—instilled in him a sense of civic duty that continues to shape his approach to leadership. Following officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he was commissioned in the Luxembourg Army in 2002, a foundation that strengthened his discipline, strategic thinking, and global outlook.
Parallel to his military and public service, Guillaume pursued practical business experience with internships at Union Chimique Belge, Deutsche Bank in London, and ArcelorMittal in Spain. At 19, he became Honorary President of the Luxembourg Trade and Investment Board (TIB), where his leadership has helped transform the country into a hub for innovation and investment.
In September 2025, ministers Xavier Bettel and Lex Delles, along with all members of the TIB, paid tribute to the Prince’s “unwavering commitment to the country’s economic development.”
His initiatives, particularly in “social business” and microfinance, demonstrate a commitment to economic growth that balances profitability with social impact.
As Luxembourg prepares for the formal accession ceremonies beginning October 3 2025, including Guillaume’s oath before parliament, public receptions, and a gala dinner, it is clear that the new Grand Duke is not only inheriting a throne but also continuing a legacy of economic diplomacy and visionary leadership.
A statement on the Grand Ducal family site confirmed his future involvement: “Although he is stepping down as President, the future Head of State will remain fully committed to this issue, which is close to his heart.”
